Welcome to the District 6820 website!

January is Rotary Awareness Month

Rotary District 6820

July 1, 2012

It is truly an honor and privilege to serve Rotary District 6820 as the 2012-2013 District Governor.  I’m excited about the opportunities that await us as we go into the new Rotary year.  We are fortunate to have had the leadership that we have had in the past.  Most recently, I would like to extend my thanks to our now Past District Governor, Bob Graves for his dynamic leadership during this past year.  Bob is not only a great mentor but he was always there when I needed him along the way.  I'm confident that he will continue to be a valuable resource for our district in the years ahead.  I know you join with me in thanking him and Carole for their service.

Our district is in great shape and we have a number of strong, district-wide, supported projects that we will continue to build on during the year ahead.  Many clubs throughout our district are supporting projects like the Malawi water-well project, the Dictionary project, and the Between the Lions reading program.

I'm proud to report that we are moving forward with the selection and preparation of our upcoming Group Study Exchange team, to New South Wales, Australia, in October 2012.  Let me thank Hal Morgan, Vicksburg Club, and his capable committee for their efforts

Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka’s theme for 2012-2013, is “Peace Through Service”.  He believes that our 4-Way Test fits into this theme and that this is not just a motto but a way of life.  By putting other’s needs before our desires, he believes that this is how we can build a more peaceful world.

I would like to see us think BIG during the year ahead.  We have a talented District leadership team and 44 great clubs.  I believe we can accomplish some amazing things during the year ahead.  In order to do this, we will need every member's help.  I would like to see us focus on the following:

  • Promote Polio Plus
  • Increase Membership by 5%
  • Grow Contributions to The Rotary Foundation by 15%
  • Prepare Clubs and District for Implementation of Future Vision
  • Increase Rotary Awareness
  • Club participation in local and international projects

I was reminded of a couple of things at a recent Rotary Zone meeting.  Only 20%of all Rotarians have ever invited a guest to a meeting and only about that same percentage has given to the Rotary Foundation.   I’m confident that we can do better.

Let's keep in mind that our efforts are for the less fortunate and we have the opportunity to change the world in a positive way.  I would like to encourage you and your club to consider how we can do more good in our communities and around the world.  This will only happen if we are intentional about what we want to accomplish and that we repeat our efforts on a consistent basis.

God has blessed us with a great deal.  Let's take those many talents and resources and help those that are in need.  We can truly make a difference if we try.

I look forward to visiting with your club in the near future.

"Peace Through Service"

Here are two District 6820 Dictionary Project photos. Tom Johnson presents District Governor Nominee (DGN) Brian Hall (District 6840) with a dictionary as our District 6820 DGN Paul Bucurel observes.  Brian was delighted to receive the dictionary that was denied to him in the third grade.  In the the second photo, Tom Johnson presented an update on the “Mississippi Learning” program to multi-district leaders and asked for their continued support.

Hello to all from Paris!

Wanted to drop you all a quick note and update you on an amazing Rotary opportunity I am about to embark on this weekend in Berlin! Last week I attended a Rotaract Soirée--while there, a fellow Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and I were invited by the Paris District 1660 Governor to accompany him and other Parisian Rotary members to The Rotary Global Peace Forum in Berlin. Here's a link to the video describing the weekend: http://vimeo.com/35382747. The theme this year is "Peace without Borders" and the Rotary International President will be in attendance and leading conferences!

Needless to say, I am so very excited about this opportunity, and couldn't wait to share this with you all. I have put a bit more information about it on my blog, but of course I will update more when I return:

Rotary keeps on giving! I cannot wait for the enrichment of this conference and time of genuine culture exchange with the Parisian and German Rotary clubs. Without the Downtown Jackson Rotary club, I wouldn't have this opportunity and now this association with the Paris Rotary District. Thank you all for your support!

Already looking forward to sharing these pictures this summer upon my return!

All the best,

Anne Waldrop
