Message from District Governor Eileen Rau

Last month I talked about Rotary's call to action and then Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast.  In this area, we had to contend with power outages, but to the south there was utter destruction.  My classmate Bonnie Sirower was in the center of it in New Jersey and kept the Rotary Governors abreast of what was going on and what was needed for relief efforts.  All it took was a simple e-mail describing the situation and the clubs in our district went into action.

The Bloomfield Club sent a donation from their club collection efforts plus a match from their own club foundation to the NJ Rotary districts.  The Easthampton Club used profit from its Pumpkinfest for relief efforts.  The Chicopee Club filled two tractor trailers with goods for Staten Island with help from the Enfield and Somers Clubs.  Torrington and Winsted delivered goods to NJ in two trips.  One of the members of the Franklin County Club and her family organized an effort to fill up two FedEx trucks in Greefield and Turners and Shelburne Falls, MA.  The Southington, Pittsfield, South Windsor, and Great Barrington Clubs are sending funds to help out. The Clubs in Avon-Canton, Farminton, East Hartford and Simsbury-Granby Clubs are working on a collection for donations in December.  Our district is sending $10,000 from our reserve fund to the affected Rotary districts in NJ and NY.

Wherever and whenever people are in need, Rotarians find a way to help showing the Power of Rotary in action.

Ann Lee Hussey to be Keynote Speaker for 2013 Pre-PETS on February 12th

2010-2011 District 7780 Governor Ann Lee Hussey will be the keynote speaker for District 7890's Pre-PETS and Mid-year Presidents' Meeting on February 12th at the Enfield Holiday Inn in Enfield, CT.  Ann joined Rotary in April 2002 and immediately became involved.  She has traveled twice to Venzuela on Rotoplast trips to assist children receiving surgeries for cleft lip and cleft palate.  As a polio survivor, Ann's primary passion is Rotary's work to eradicate polio.  She has participated in 15 National Immunization Day (NID) efforts in India, Egypt, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Bangladesh, and over the past 4 years has organized and led NID teams.   To learn more about Ann, click on the link below.

A Grant Management Seminar will also be presented at this year's Pre-PETS event, focusing on Rotary's new grants programs starting in July 2013.  Clubs should plan on having at least two club members attend this seminar in order for their club to be eligible to apply for any District Designated Funds (DDF) in 2013-2014.  Participants must be active club members, other than the President-Elect 2013-2014 and the current club President, who care about helping people in their communities and beyond.  For more information and a registration form, click on the event link under District Events on this homepage.
