February is World Understanding Month
Twelve months ago we celebrated one year of a Polio free India and since then India remains Polio free and the overall number of new cases continues to come down. Whilst we met the Gates' Challenge it is still imperative that we continue giving to Polio plus as there is still a lot to do to permanently rid the world of Polio. Now is a great time to contribute to The Rotary Foundation (both the Annual Programs Fund and Polio plus) as the Australian Dollar is still high versus the US Dollar.
February 23rd is the Rotary's 108th anniversary which this year happens to be when the Annual District Conference will be held in Geelong. Come along and help us all celebrate that weekend. I am sure late registrations will be accepted. Also please think about having an event either side of the Conference to celebrate our birthday and to raise money for the Foundation.

Resulting in the withdrawal of P.P.Chris Booth from the role as District Governor nominee, the position is being re – advertised.

I therefore invite you to consider nominating a member of your Club as District Governor for the year 2014 – 15.

Nominations should be set out on the “Governor – nominee Data Form”, and in accordance with District By-Law No. 1, noting particularly that any nomination needs to be made on the basis of a resolution passed at a general meeting of the Club.

The eligibility requirements for a District Governor as set out in the Rotary International By – Laws are as follows.

AUDITING YOUR ONLINE PUBLIC IMAGE.

Ensure your Club is Contactable.

A surprising number of Rotary Clubs and Districts throughout Australia remain difficult for the uninitiated to contact. Problems include:

  • No contact phone numbers showing up in to 10 Google results or Yellow/White Pages searches.
  • Contact details not easily discovered on Club or District websites.
  • Out of date contact phone numbers.
  • Phone numbers of ex-Rotarians or even deceased members being provided.
  • Multiple websites providing inconsistent contact details (e.g Club vs District or old Club websites not removed).
  • Multiple phone numbers for multiple club officers meaning no clear contact and people having to ring multiple people to find the right person with whom to speak.
  • Contact details referring to message services or email addresses that aren't checked regularly or at all.
  • Wrong email addresses.
  • Contact email forms that will not submit across all browsers, tablets or smartphones.

The above information was forwarded for our benefit by the Regional Public Image Coordinators, Howard Tong & Philip Archer.

Dear fellow Rotarians,

In December, I spoke at the first of the three Rotary Global Peace Forums we have planned for this Rotary year. This first event, with the theme “Peace Without Borders,” was held in Berlin, the home of the Berlin Peace Clock. The clock, intended as a piece of art, is 3 meters high and weighs over 2 tons. On its side are inscribed the words, Time bursts all walls asunder.

Strategic Plan  Strategic planning involves creating a vision, with supporting goals that can be regularly measured and adjusted as needed. Use this guide and the accompanying worksheet as a starting point for developing your strategic plan, and customize these resources to meet your club’s needs. The guide is designed for Rotary clubs but can be adapted for districts. The worksheet can be completed independently or as a group. Facilitators should become familiar with these resources and prepare an agenda before conducting a strategic planning meeting. The agenda should allot the majority of time to the second and third steps of the process, which focus on the future, and less time to the current state of the club.

It’s hard to believe that we are half way through the current Rotary year and that Christmas has been and gone. Many of you will have been involved in a Rotary community service project during the Christmas and New Year period which gave you a chance to share some time with friends and to help make a difference to those less fortunate. Did you use these opportunities to talk about why you are a Rotarian? Did you invite others to be? If you didn’t, ask yourself why not.
In November last I was invited to attend the Future Leaders Seminar in Adelaide. It was a fantastic forum in which to network with other Rotarians who represented districts from all over Australia and it was encouraging to see the diversity. The seminar concentrated on leadership, membership, public relations, communication and The Foundation. Not surprisingly these are the main issues we talk about at District and club level.

Image  FOUNDATION NEWS - FEBRUARY 2013
I’m just back from two days training on the New Foundation programme in San Diego. I spent one day with DGE Tim and the next with other District Foundation Chairs.
It was a worthwhile experience where we were shown how our Clubs will benefit from the Future Vision Plan.
We will be holding two Grant Seminars in the next month or so and I strongly recommend that a representative of each Club attends.
As I have said before, for a Club to be included in a Grant they need to be qualified and, to reach this qualification, a representative needs to attend the District Seminar and/or a Grant Seminar. The Club also needs to complete a Memorandum of Understanding and have it signed by the President and President elect.

Update on Rotary involvement in Tassie and Gippsland Fires

Tasmanian Fires.
 As all Clubs would be aware the District has allocated $5000 to Dist 9830(Tasmania). The following
Clubs have also supported activities in Tassie: Frankston North, Warragul, Traralgon Central, and Yarram.
 I have had numerous phone calls and discussions with District Governor and Past District Governor with  regards to assistance that District 9820 could provide in the Donelly fire area. At this time we have not received advice as to what assistance is required.

INTERNATIONAL

Rotary contributes significantly to disadvantaged communities through provision of clean water and building projects. Bed nets cost only $10 but very effectively protect a family against Malaria. Rotary's Disaster Aid Australia and Shelter Box provide shelter, bedding, tools and essential cooking equipment in disaster recovery situations. With a Club network encompassing 200 countries and 1.2 million Rotarians working together, Rotary is a true united nations.
