Today's Program
Invocation given by Mick Gilbertson

  • Birthdays this week-Jeremy Bilhorn 3.21, Kristin Fillhouer 3.22, Larry Siker 3.22, and Whitey Brunsell 3.26. Happy birthday, all!
  • MariVi thanked Mari Anne and Dave for their help with her Venezuelan dinner on Saturday night, and Mandy said it was delicious! She has raised about half of her Spring trip money. She will be selling raffle tickets for a Flamenco (?) performance soon to help get her closer to her goal.
  • Janesville Jets social is this Thursday! Have you paid Mandy the $5 entrance fee? Have fun-
  • District 6250 Conference will be in LaCrosse on May 12-13. Registration and agenda can be found at rotary6250.org.
  • See the flier below for a Meet and Greet session with Olympic athlete Matt Antoine on 4.12.
  • Steve S: Our Club is going to have a Vocational Day on April 10th. If you want your business to host, look for an email from Steve and let him know. He's looking for 3-4 Businesses to host our Members that day. NO MEETING AT ROTARY GARDENS ON APRIL 10th!
  • Dave Warren reminded us of the valuable connections that can be made through Rotary. On his first visit to Uganda he stayed with Joi Nagobi's family and visited the modest local library. Recently the library received a container load of books coordinated by the Madison Breakfast Club. Joi and Dave made these connections through Rotary , and as a result, many lives will be impacted in Uganda. Local and international connections get things done.
  • Raffle: Gary B won the pot, and JP rolls over.
Today the Journey Linemen team Matt and Matt from Rock Energy Cooperative brought in their 'Hotline Demo' unit, which showed us the impact  7200 volts can have while they talked about electrical safety. Bottom line is to never, ever be casual around downed power lines- always call the experts. They demonstrated what happens when various materials come in contact with the hot and phase wires- a hot dog cooked in a blink, a tree branch burned, a 'squirrel', a mylar balloon...and showed some graphic pictures of  animals that came into contact with the hot wires. Always call 811 a few days in advance to ask Diggers Hotline about your property before shoveling or digging in your lawn. For more information on the services visit www.rock.coop.

Rotary Service Connections

March 22 is World Water Day. It's a day to celebrate water. It's a day to make a difference for the members of the global population who suffer from water related issues. It's a day to prepare for how we manage water in the future. In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the first World Water Day. Dave Warren and other Members met recently to discuss this with Speaker Paul Ryan. From Dave:

On Monday, March 13, members of our club met with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to discuss our club member’s (and all Rotarian’s) interest in ensuring all people have access to clean water and sanitation facilities.  David Arndt, Dennis Beggs, Mick Gilbertson, Paul Romanelli and David Warren were joined by Jenifer Healy from the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group (WASRAG).  This timing fit nicely with “World Water Day” which is celebrated on March 22.

Through our members’ generous contributions to our Rotary Foundation, scores of people around the world are now enjoying the benefits of clean water.

Past Club President David Arndt has spearheaded fund raising efforts that have resulted in a number of wells being drilled in rural Haiti (along with Bob Kimball and Heather Longhenry) and has actually traveled to and inspected some of these very facilities.  His passion for this valuable commodity is readily evident!

Speaker Ryan was very impressed upon learning about some of our club’s projects especially the Haiti Wells and Kids Against Hunger.  He asked us to compile a list that he may share with others in Washington, DC.  According to him, recognizing a problem and doing something about it is commendable.

Truly members of the Janesville Noon Rotary Club have embraced Rotary’s tagline of “Join Leaders – Exchange Ideas – Take Action.

The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...

Battling breast cancer in 2000, Kathryn Smith found comfort pursuing her lifelong interest in Franklin D. Roosevelt. The more she read, the more intrigued she became with the 32nd U.S. president’s private secretary, Marguerite Alice “Missy” LeHand. “I thought, what a fascinating life she had because she was by his side through the polio crisis, establishing the polio rehabilitation center in Warm Springs and then after his return to politics,” she says. Smith, a past president of the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson, S.C., and a longtime newspaper journalist, turned that curiosity into a book...

One of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s earliest memories is of fleeing with his family into the mountains during the Korean War, his village burning behind him. His father and grandfather had to forage for food in the woods; his mother gave birth to his siblings away from anything remotely resembling a health facility. “I have known hunger,” he says. “I have known war, and I have known what it means to be forced to flee conflict.” The soldiers who came to their rescue were flying the blue flag of the United Nations. The UN provided them with food and their schools with books....

Like a lot of us, I spent much of my childhood riding bikes, but fell out of the habit for a while. Forty years. Then my wife and I moved to New York, where cyclists risk their necks in a daily Thunderdome of cabs, police cars, firetrucks, double-decker buses, messengers on motorbikes, and delivery trucks backing around corners at 20 miles an hour. Not for me! At least not until my 50th birthday, when my metabolic furnace flamed out. Calories started going directly from beer bottle to beer belly. It was time to start exercising. Either that or give up Samuel Adams, and I couldn’t do that to...
